Routine Check offs

Ladies,

Please do not be nervous.
You have routine check offs Tuesday.
They will be in front of me and which ever captain does that part of the show with you. So, if you are on Sabre, Mindy will be watching, if you are on Flag, Holly will be watching.

Just relax, you know the work. It is just us watching, no different then doing it for your parents. :)

Have a great Monday off!

RESPONSIBILITIES

Respect: You must show respect at all times! This includes your attitude towards directors, instructors, captains, drum majors, and each other. You must have a positive attitude and show good sportsmanship. Gossiping or "Trash Talking" other teams, bands, guards, or members will NOT be allowed! Be helpful and considerate toward others! You must be willing to work hard and rehearse like you will perform at EVERY rehearsal.

General Appearance: Appearance is extremely important as we perform in front of hundreds of people every week. It is important that you always look your best not only for performances, but also when wearing any HHS Guard or HHS Band attire. Visible tattoos or body piercings are prohibited.

Hair: The Color Guard Instructors will determine specific styles.  If you have any trouble with the specific style, please speak with the Color Guard Instructors. This year we will be wearing tight buns with flowers in our hair, please, no one cut their hair till after marching season. DO NOT come to a performance with wet hair. If you color your hair, please keep it a natural color. Extreme colors are prohibited. Please keep hair pulled back out of your face during rehearsals.

Make-up: Full make-up must be worn for all games, pictures, parades, and other performances. If the Color Guard Instructors, Guard Mom or Captains feel your make-up is inappropriate, you will be instructed to fix it. Due to the nature of our activity, theater make-up must be worn. That is, heavier applied make-up then everyday wear. Colors will be determined by the Color Guard Instructor. No fingernail polish is allowed.

Jewelry: NO jewelry is allowed for any performance unless it is part of the uniform.

Uniforms: All uniforms must be clean for every performance. If you are uncertain about how to properly clean any piece of your uniform, please ask the Color Guard Instructors, Guard Mom or Flag Captains. Never spray hair spray while wearing any uniform with sequins as hair spray chemicals ruin the sequins. NO T-SHIRTS may be worn under the uniform!  If you lose or damage any part of your HHS Color Guard attire, it is your responsibility to replace it.

Rehearsals: All rehearsals are MANDATORY. Rehearsal times for the HHS band are Tuesdays and Thursdays till approximately 6PM throughout our "competition season" which lasts through part of October. Color Guard sectionals are Monday after school, 4PM – 6PM. Additional rehearsals may be called as necessary. Members are expected to give 100% at all rehearsals. Chewing gum is not permitted at rehearsals. The HHS Band Office (

The Color Guard Instructors, Band Directors, and Captains should be notified of any health or physical ailments. It is recommended to bring water to all rehearsals.

Captain / Co-Captain Tryouts HHS 2007

Captain / Co-Captain Tryouts HHS 2007

Who is eligible to tryout for captain/co-captain?

Everyone who has had one seasons of color guard is welcome to try out for captain. The decision for captain is made based upon responsibility, professionalism, experience, and leadership.

The Captain(s) will be announced by the Mini Band Camp held on May 23rd and 24th.

What do I have to do to tryout for captain?

·     Come to the meeting on Friday, April 20th at 4:00pm. This is a very important meeting as you will be assigned your clinic responsibilities and what is required of you.

·     Write a routine to music that will be given to you. More details will come about this part of the auditions.

·     Recruit at least 2 new people to attend auditions.

·     Lead stretching/warm-up at the clinics and teach the flag audition routine. You will also be instructed to lead other parts of the clinics.

·     Interview with the judges and staff. They will take place in the band room or ensemble room, depending what is available. It is a good idea to arrive a little early so you can find where they are taking place.

·     Paper due on Monday, April 23rd at the beginning of the first audition clinic. If they are not turned in at the beginning of the clinic, you will lose your privilege to audition for captain. You must write on the 2 quotes below. How they apply to you and how they apply to being a captain of the color guard.

The paper needs to be typed – font: Arial – size: 10 – spacing: single

All others will be returned for not following directions. – Please proof read and spell check as well.

1.   "You cannot be a leader, and ask other people to follow you, unless you know how to follow, too."

§     Sam Rayburn

2.   "Every man has three characters—that which he exhibits, that which he has, and that which he thinks he has."

§     Alphonse Karr

The below quotes are for you to just read and thinking about. You do NOT have to write on them.

People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. . . . The leader works in the open, and the boss in covert. The leader leads, and the boss drives.
- Theodore Roosevelt

The quality of leadership, more than any other single factor, determines the success or failure of an organization.
- Fred Fiedler & Martin Chemers Improving Leadership Effectiveness

"Never give an order that can't be obeyed."
-General Douglas MacArthur

·          Attend the Maryville Color Guard Clinic on May 5th.

  • Write a 2-minute routine: you may include, dance, weapon, and flag. Must have at least 1 minute of flag work. You must be able to perform this routine either in the Band room, Gym, or outside. I have no idea what room we will audition in or what the weather will be like outside. Monday the music for this will be given to you. This must be ready by may 1st to be performed in front of the judges.
  • Have 3 Teacher recommendations turned in by May 1st. These maybe any 3 teachers you have had since attending Heritage. Forms will be given out Monday.
